BELLINGHAM — The Whatcom Community College Black Student Union (BSU) is bringing the spirit of Harlem to campus this spring with the first-ever Mini-Harlem Fest, a celebration of Black culture, music and community, scheduled for Friday, June 6, from 4 to 7 p.m.

Inspired by the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, the event will feature a screening of Summer of Soul, the acclaimed documentary by Questlove that highlights the original festival and its deep cultural significance.

“This is more than just a festival—it’s a celebration of resilience, identity and joy in Black communities,” said Icarus Mali Brashear-Simmons, Simpson Intercultural Center (SIC) Peer Navigator and BSU President.

Hosted by the SIC and the BSU, Mini-Harlem Fest will take place in the Syre Student Center and spill out into the Syre Courtyard. Organizers encourage attendees to bring sunscreen and picnic blankets to enjoy the outdoor elements of the event.

In addition to the film, Mini-Harlem Fest will showcase local live performers, a student art gallery, and food from local vendor El Pollo Feo. The menu includes gluten-free bun options and Impossible patties available upon request for an upcharge. The first 60 WCC students to sign in at the event will receive a free food voucher.

“We’re excited to share this experience with the campus and continue building connections through culture,” said Brashear-Simmons.

Mini-Harlem Fest is just one of several end-of-quarter events hosted by the SIC. Other upcoming events include:

  • APIDA Karaoke: Thursday, May 1, 3–5 p.m.
  • APIDA Game Night: Tuesday, May 6, 3–5 p.m.
  • APIDA Festival – “Legacy of Resistance: Justice, Healing, and Joy”: Wednesday, May 14, 6–8:30 p.m.
  • APIDA Talkin’ History – “Legacy of Resistance: Birth of the Asian American Identity”: Tuesday, May 27, 3–4:30 p.m.
  • IC End of Year Celebration: Thursday, June 12, at LRN160 (Time TBD)

For more information on these events or to get involved, students are encouraged to connect with the SIC. In the meantime, the BSU looks forward to celebrating with the full WCC community at the Mini-Harlem Fest this June.
