Sophomore Night against Everett ended with an excruciating 78-73 loss for the women’s basketball team and a 106-100 loss for the men’s team, both against the Everett Trojans.
The last home game for both men’s and women’s basketball started with a bang with good moods everywhere for sophomore night. WCC fans brought out posters and balloons for the event and cheered for the players at every part of the game.
The women’s game started off slow for WCC with Everett having a 12 point lead at the end of the first quarter. A win started to look out of reach by halftime; with the lead going as high as 14, something needed to happen for WCC. And like a switch, the turnovers and bad passes started racking up for Everett, leading to amazing fast breaks for WCC.
The defense played by the lady Orcas was stupendous in the most crucial moments when the game needed it. Not only was the defense on point, but the duo of Kyla Miller and Benemi Sanchez went out and dropped 20 each. With clutch defense from WCC, the game came down to the wire. And then, with a few free throws and some turnovers, the game was over.
Likewise, the men’s team had some excellent playing before a very close loss, with Kelian Torkornoo going off for 27 points and 14 rebounds. Noah McCord had a near triple double with 22 points, 9 assists, and 9 rebounds.
But this effort wasn’t enough for the win here at WCC, and we’ll have to wait until next season for action to recommence.
