Letter from the (assistant) editor

What an exciting time for Washington! In just one night we’ve turned into the most progressive state in the union!

Sure, Maine and Maryland now let people marry whoever it is they love regardless of their sex and Colorado passed a law that will keep thousands of harmless people with petty possession charges out of their jails, but our state is the only one that got both!

I’m proud to be able to say that I live in a state where the government lets its citizens live whichever way they want so long as no one is hurt in the process.

It’s also an exciting time to be an American!

There were some important firsts at the national level this election as well. The first openly gay senator, Tammy Baldwin, was elected in Wisconsin, and the first Asian woman, and Buddhist, senator was elected in Hawaii.

Regardless of how you might feel about their party affiliations or political beliefs, I think we can all agree that more diversity in congress is always a good thing. Having more perspectives represented will bring us closer to the goal of having a completely democratic society.

Congress looks like it is about as split as it was before which could mean more political deadlock in the future, but with the results of this election I’m hopeful that citizens will take a more active role in holding their representatives accountable. Our country will never be able to make any more progress if we don’t make our congress work together.

Our state and country are going through some major changes after this election cycle, but I am excited to see where we can go next.
