Whatcom Community College’s Child Development Center became the latest victim of budget cuts on April 7, when the college announced it would close the community childcare facility it has operated for many years at the conclusion of spring quarter, June 18.

The decision was made as part of Whatcom’s larger review process stemming from mounting state and federal budget cuts, according to a college press release. After a $1.2 million budget cut last year, Whatcom is currently facing an additional $650,000 in projected cuts. The exact nature of the budget reductions remain to be seen, as the Washington State Legislature looks to approve a final budget draft in the coming weeks.

The closure of the Child Development Center will impact 26 students, 16 employees, and 33 community members who currently utilize the services of the facility on a part or full-time basis.

The Horizon is currently working on a story regarding the close for its next issue, due out April 27. Check back for updates in the near future.
