Bellingham’s Backyard

Mount Baker Highway is lined with fields, farms, broken down trucks and even llamas.  On Strand Road you’ll see a giant silo that towers over a farm, where pigs root and turkeys gobble back and forth. Deming, like Whatcom Community College, is unique.

Whatcom accommodates many county students, Skagit Valley Community College in Mt. Vernon being the closest alternative. The commute is worth it.

County life is different: strangers wrangle horses together, farmers share their wisdom and children are raised working with their families.

In Deming there’s a community, it’s a little odd, and sometimes you have to jump your truck with a tractor, but there’s always someone who will lend a hand.

  1. What a great photo essay. Text and photos work well together, and it’s a fine original work. Good layout too. I really enjoyed it!
