She had always talked about the school needing more space for bikes, so Linda Lambert, Whatcom’s library director, suggested that the school build a bike shed in her name.
Guren was an active woman, as well as a vegetarian, and “only the worst snow would keep her from biking to work,” said Lambert. She was also a fiddler in the local music group “What the Chelm!,” which performs klezmer music.
After Guren passed away, the musical group held a benefit concert to fundraise for the shed, and an anonymous donator agreed to match whatever amount of money the library staff provided to fund the shed.
A plaque will soon be added to the shed so students will know that the shed was built in honor of Guren.
