Approximately one month after being elected to the position of president of the Associated Students of Whatcom Community College, Stephanie Young is stepping down from student council, effective at the end of this quarter.

“After a lot of deliberation, I have decided to resign.” the current secretary of the student council told the general council at the meeting on Thursday. “It was a very difficult decision,” she said, “and not one that I took lightly.”

She reiterated that the decision was not an easy one to make and stated that it was due to “personal circumstances.”

In an interview, Young went into more details regarding her sudden departure. “I felt if I did it now, we could still put a great person in that spot.”

Young said that, in addition to resigning from student council, she will be taking a year off school. She said that she is doing so “to make sure I’m taking care of myself, and that I’m on the right path.”

Young also said that she feels she is over-exerting herself. “I don’t want to several things not well,” she said. “I want to focus on one or two things and do them great.”

When asked about any plans to return to Whatcom or the student council, Young says she would love to, but hesitates to state that she will.

“I would love to rejoin council,” she said. “I do need to remember that the number on reason that I’m here is to finish school. Any activities that I participate in need to be in furtherance of that.”

There will be a run-off election, between the two other candidates, Charles Pope and Troi Gale, next Thursday.
