Drama Club Fundraiser TODAY
The drama club will be holding a fundraiser on Wed., Jan. 27 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Syre Student Center lobby in order to defray the costs of sending several of its members to the American Theatre Festival next month in Reno, Nevada.
Raffle tickets, available at $2 each, will be sold, with the winning tickets scoring a pair of seats for an upcoming student showcase of drama and dance.
“Old School” plagiarism discussion TODAY

A brown bag discussion on plagiarism, Tobias Wolff, and the WhatcomReads! book “Old School,” and led by WCC library staff members Ara Taylor and Linda Lambert, will be held today, Jan. 27, from 3 to 4 p.m. in Cascade Hall Rm. 104. Chocolate, cookies, and drinks will be provided.

“Wild Things” Come to Whatcom

The 2009 film “Where the Wild Things Are” will be shown in the Syre Student Center Auditorium at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 28. Cost is $3. This is an opportunity to see the film before its DVD release on March 2. Deception,” a Whatcom County writing contest being held in honor of this year’s WhatcomReads! book, “Old School,” by Tobias Wolff, is seeking more submissions before its Jan. 28 deadline.
Winners will be announced February 1, 2010 on the Web site www.whatcomreads.org. One winner from each educational institution will be published in an anthology and will be invited to read their work at an author’s reception at Village Books on Sunday, February 21, 2010 at 4 p.m. The winning entry will also be published in the February 9 issue of the Horizon.
In order to participate, the following criteria must be met: 1) You must attend a high school or institution of higher education (Western Washington University, Bellingham Technical College, Whatcom Community College, or the Northwest Indian College) 2) Write up to 800 words 3) Create an entirely original story (fiction or non-fiction is welcome)

A Gathering of Voices seeking submissions
“A Gathering of Voices,” an annual online anthology of outstanding student writing and art at Whatcom, is currently seeking submissions from fall 2009 before its Jan. 31 (at midnight) deadline. Submissions can be from all disciplines and in any format. Student writing recommended by instructors are welcome as well.

Those interested should send an e-mail with the subject heading “Gathering of Voices Submission” to wrobertson@whatcom.ctc.edu. You must include your full name, contact information, and, if applicable, the class the paper was written for and the quarter taken, as well as the instructor’s name.

Submissions should be attached to the e-mail as MS-Word documents (.doc) or rich text files (.rtf). You will receive a confirmation of your submission after it’s received.

Student Art on Display

Several students from instructor Pam Richardson’s fall quarter Art 116 (three-dimensional design) class currently have artwork from their final project displayed in the Heiner Center lobby. The pieces of art are forms based on shoes created in homage to artists that the students admire, and will be on display until February 4.

Winter Quarter Student Success Workshops

A series of student success workshops will be held every Monday during the quarter, from 1 to 2 p.m. in Laidlaw 203. Topics addressed will include: a financial aid workshop (Feb. 1), procrastination (Feb. 8), test anxiety (Feb. 22), scholarships (Mar. 1), and stress management (Mar. 8). Free tech help

The IT Professionals of Tomorrow will offer a free help desk every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the first floor of Laidlaw (outside the financial aid office) to assist any student, staff, or faculty member who needs help with their home computer or laptop.

Donuts rocket into Dockside

Fresh, famous, locally produced Rocket Donuts are now available at the Dockside Café. The donuts, which include everything from chocolate donuts to vegan muffins for under $1.50, will be available every Monday and Wednesday. QSA Masquerade Ball

Whatcom’s Queer Straight Alliance will present its Winter Masquerade Ball on Saturday, Feb. 6, from 7 to 11 p.m. in the Syre Student Center Auditorium. For ages 16 and up, the event will feature food, dancing, games, and costume contests.

Hockey Night in…Everett with the IFC

Whatcom’s International Friendship Club will attend an Everett Silvertips hockey game on Saturday, Feb. 13. at the Comcast Arena in Everett. The Silvertips will take on the Moose Jaw Warriors.
Tickets for the event are $15, and interested students can go to the International Programs office in the Syre Student Center, Room 201, to sign up. The student group will go to the Seattle Premium Outlets mall for shopping before attending the 7 p.m. game. They will return to Whatcom around 11 pm.

Professor’s brother wins big on Jeopardy

Whatcom psychology professor Colette Colburn’s younger brother, Jason Zollinger, recently won $148,000 during a six-night run on the popular TV game show “Jeopardy.”

Colburn said that Zollinger, 39, who lives in New York State, had been trying to get on “Jeopardy” since for 22 years. Colburn said she flew back east to watch the show with the rest of her family. “It was so great,” she said. “It was a really neat experience.”

Colburn said her brother plans to use some of the money on a home remodeling project.

Spanish Club Tamale Orders

The Spanish Club is making and selling tamales along with local friends of the club, and will be taking pre-orders until Feb. 2. They are offering cheese or chicken tamales, and the masa (dough) they will be using has some lard in it.

Tamales will be frozen but not cooked, and will need to be steamed for about 90 minutes. The proceeds from the sale will be split between the Spanish Club and “A Watered Garden,” a local group of Spanish and English learners. Orders can be picked up at the Spanish Club meetings on Feb. 9 and Feb. 16, from 4 to 5 p.m. in Laidlaw 208.

2nd Annual Combined Fund Drive Chili Cook-off Challenge

Whatcom’s 2nd annual Combined Fund Drive Chili Cook-off Challenge will take place Thursday, Feb. 4 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Syre Student Center, rooms 107 and 108.

Anyone interested in bringing chili should bring a crock pot of their recipe to share with others, including “professional” judges that will assist in choosing the best tasting chili and awarding prizes. The campus community will vote on their favorite for the “People’s Choice” award. The winner will be presented a ceramic bowl created by Whatcom art instructor Rob Beishline.

Other awards include the “Trustee’s Award” and the “Chef’s Award.” Anyone interested in submitting a chili should contact Becky Rawlings by Jan. 29 at brawlings@whatcom.ctc.edu, or by phone at (360) 383-3404. All proceeds from the event will go to a Haiti earthquake relief rund.

Basic Skills instructor Mary Mele took last year’s top honors with her Italian Chili. Who will take home the crown this year?
